White shutters beside a grey armchair with striped cushions

Started with one van and a sample case

Fitting for a large chain, Rosie kept meeting customers who had picked a fabric from a photo and disliked it on the window.

She set up Sillwright in 2011 with a simple rule: every customer sees the samples at their own window, and the person who measures is the person who fits. Gareth joined to sew Roman blinds, and the workroom in Broadheath followed; the other blinds are made to her measurements by specialist makers.

We still work that way. We keep the firm small on purpose, so the price you are quoted is written down by the person who will fit your blinds.

Working with a small local fitter

What changes when the people who sell you blinds also measure and fit them, and sew the Roman blinds themselves.

  • Samples in your own light

Colours change from window to window, so we bring fabrics and slats to you rather than sending a link.

  • No handovers

The person who measures your windows comes back to fit them, so nothing gets lost between visits.

  • Child-safe as standard

Every corded blind has its child-safety devices fitted before we leave, and we suggest cordless styles for children’s rooms.

  • A written price

You get the quote in writing at the visit, with fitting included, before anything is ordered.

  • Tidy fitting

Dust sheets down, old fixings filled if a blind moves, and the packaging goes with us.

  • Repairs and refits

Moving house, or a chain has snapped? We refit and repair blinds we did not make, where parts allow.

How we work

Two trips to your home: one to measure and choose, one to fit. The price is agreed in writing in between.

  1. A hand holding a tape measure up at a windowThe visit, about an hour

Step 1: We come to measure

A fitter visits at a time that suits you, measures every window and brings samples to see in your own light.

  2. Hands guiding pale fabric through a sewing machineBlinds in about two weeks

Step 2: Made to your measurements

Your blinds are made to the millimetre. We put the price in writing before anything is ordered.

  3. A fitter on a step ladder working at the top of a window in a bright roomFitting day

Step 3: Fitted in one visit

The same fitter comes back, fits and checks every blind, and takes the packaging away.

“They brought the samples round on a Thursday afternoon and we chose the fabric holding it up to our own window. Fitted ten days later, and the bedroom is finally dark at five in the morning.”
